Overview

TL;DR

Slowed down by an outdated paper process, CoreLogic came to Pivotal Labs to design and build an interface that would simplify the way banks made decisions on property tax payments and accessed information on escrowed loans.

MY ROLE

I took over for another designer 4 months into the project. I led all research and design efforts and collaborated with SMEs and users to understand the world of property taxes

THE SITUATION

CoreLogic was losing money on their outdated, tax payment decisioning process for two reasons:

  1. They had to maintain a team of 192 people to manually make property tax payment decisions

  2. Every time a bank was late on a property tax payment (often) CoreLogic had to pay a fine

The ultimate strategy

MOVE TO

MOVE FROM

To a product that empowers banks to track their property tax payment decisions exactly how they want, help them make critical payment decisions through real-time data, and allows for bulk decision making.

An extremely manual and repetitive, 5-day long process for banks to make payment decisions on property taxes.

… and by doing so, save CoreLogic money.

How property tax payments are made

Let’s say you’re a property tax processer working at a bank in Boston and you need to communicate to CoreLogic all of the property tax decisions you’re making on escrowed loans. You can do this by grouping the loans in any way that makes sense to you and then making bulk decisions on the ones you are paying.

You’ll see some fascinating data on the property taxes your bank is paying, sliced and diced in as many ways as you desire. From here you can drill down to how much you owe by check or wire to each county.

Outcomes

  • As of June 2019, Corelogic's Digital Tax Platform Decisioning Application serves 201 banks

  • External users at banks have submitted more than 115k decisions through Corelogic's Decisioning application

  • Completely eliminated the need to have multiple tools to gather required data

  • Reduced processing time from 5 days to 2 days

Themes and challenges

  • Designing a one size fits all process for hundreds of banks ranging from small town banks to Chase all with different, complex guidelines and rules.

  • CoreLogic has legacy apps that they currently use today. We were occasionally constrained by their existing systems for storing and accessing data.

  • Designing effective data displays.
